Often during the Social Security Disability process, our clients ask us, “How can I speed up the process?” A dire need request may be the answer.
It’s important to understand what a dire need request is, so you know whether or not it’s an option for you.
What Qualifies for Social Security Disability Dire Need Requests?
Under specific circumstances, Social Security may be able to expedite your case. Some reasons Social Security may grant a dire need request include:
- Homelessness: This means you are living in a shelter or on the street. Social Security does not consider a person homeless if they are staying with friends and family.
- Utilities Shut Off
- Inability to afford life sustaining medical treatment or medication: For example, if you need to have chemotherapy or radiation to continue living, we can send a dire need request in that situation
- Injured Military Personnel: It’s possible to expedite a case depending on military status and injury dates
With each one of the circumstances, it’s important to know that we have to submit proof along with the dire need request. Social Security needs to verify your circumstance before they can make a decision on your request.
