The long fight is over, you have been approved for disability benefits, the question remains, how long will I continue to receive these benefits? A definitive cutoff date is the day you turn 65. When you turn 65 your disability benefits will roll over into your retirement benefits which is usually a larger amount than your disability benefits. However, depending on which type of benefit there are other circumstances that can ruin your eligibility for disability benefits.

How Can I Lose My DIB Benefits?

If you are receiving disability insurance benefits, or DIB, there are a couple of things that can cause you to lose your DIB benefits:

  1. Your condition improves and you no longer qualify medically
  2. You return to work and work more than 20 hours a week or make more than $1,100 per month
  3. You are convicted of a crime. Even if the conviction does not result in jail time any felony conviction may ruin your eligibility.
